In
the Adour valley, some farmers from Bigorre, proud of this local
speciality re-launched during the 80s, this traditional production in
Pyrenees, with its ideal soil and climate.
The initiative was consolidated
in 1988 by the creation of a co-operative that included 12 growers.
In 1997, the Tarbais became the
first bean to have a Red Label conferred upon it.
And in 2000, a Protected
Geographical Indication (PGI) re-enforced the area, designating strict
boundaries, around the area where cultivation thrives (see: Land).
Pyrenean
Co-operative of Tarbais Bean Growers (CPPHT), includes some 100 member
growers, who harvest about 100 metric tons of beans.
It role is to provide farmers
with all the required advice and services for cultivating the beans to the Red
Label specifications.
It is also responsible for
promotion and marketing.
